As soon as the Indians ceded this area and Talladega County was established, so was the Methodist Church. In 1833 near the Big Spring on Battle Street the Methodists began to meet in a log shack. The first building erected as a meeting place was on the site of the present municipal building. Twenty years later the congregation had outgrown that building, and in 1854 built a large brick church on the lot where the Talladega County Board of Education is today. On April 11, 1924, the congregation gathered there and marched in a body one block up the street to occupy the present structure on the corner of East and South Street. In this beautiful and stately building committed and caring people have gathered in fellowship and worship for 100 years.
First Church is also the Mother Church to other Methodist congregations in Talladega. Encouragement and support were given to the founding of Trinity in 1913, to Bemiston in 1945, and to Clare Purcell in 1954.
In 2022 the Talladega First United Methodist Church became an independent Methodist congregation and changed its name to Talladega First Methodist. In 2024 the congregation chose to become a congregational member of the Global Methodist Church. The same people with the same gracious expression of Wesleyan-grounded Christianity, are now experiencing a new beginning and new life.
Talladega First Methodist Church is and has been at the heart of this city. You will find people from this congregation where the everyday work of the world is done in the schools, health care services, industries, and government agencies in the work of caring for our neighbors through Red Door Kitchen, Samaritan House, and so many other expressions. First Methodist is here for others. We have been and we will be and welcome all who will come and see what God is doing in and through His people and join in the journey.
